About Glamping Domes

Located in Les Orres, France, 700 m from the Preclaux Chairlift, Alpine Cocoon is a newly developed property providing accommodation, ski-to-door access, and a terrace.

At VikingDome, we designed and built domes in collaboration with our French partner, Fugu Structures, in 2019.

Nine insulated domes with a diameter of 7.2 meters and a height of 4 meters, fixed to the wooden terraces, were built for the property and are expanding every year.

All-year-round use 

The challenge is to design and develop an insulated dome envelope suitable for year-round use in mountainous regions, capable of withstanding temperature variations and high loads of rain and snow.

One of the main tasks was to develop the custom solution for the condensation at the area of the panoramic window to avoid moisture on the oak struts of the carcass of the glamping dome.

Solution: A 7-layer custom-designed insulated envelope was created to extract moisture from both the envelope itself and the interior of the dome.

The oak struts of the panoramic window are made with integrated cut polycarbonate strips that connect with the window to prevent condensation and moisture from resting on the wood.

We offer insulated glamping domes in three diameters: 6m, 7.2m, and 8m (other sizes can be designed).

Frame: The frame parts are not visible when the frame is covered with panels on both the outside and inside. C24 class structural wood is used, along with double-layer galvanized STAR connectors. An insulation layer is placed inside, between the interior plywood panels and the external OSB panels. 

The visible frame parts of the panoramic window are made of ash wood, with stainless steel STAR connectors. There are polycarbonate spacers between the ash wood and the PVC coating.

Facade: The facade of the dome is multi-layered. External coating: PVC cover, diffusion film, OSB board. 

Insulation: The dome insulation layer is 50 mm PIR. Fireproof class B-s1, d0.  

FF-PIR thermal insulation panels are made of a rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam core and are covered with multi-layer aluminum foil on both sides.

The extremely low thermal conductivity of these panels (λD = 0.023 W/(m·K)) allows the thickness of structures to be reduced by up to two times. This not only saves space and usable area in the premises but also reduces the weight of the structure.

Interior: Birch plywood triangular panels are attached to the frame with thin nails. The plywood surface is made of natural untreated wood. If you want to improve the interior, you can paint or varnish the plywood after installation.

Door, window, chimney: Door frame construction, door h2050x890mm, handle, lock, keys.

A designated space for a fireplace is provided. Fireproof stainless steel components are available for the interior and exterior of the chimney. Please note that the fireplace and chimney are not included.

Resistance: Dome constructions are calculated to withstand snow load up to 1.6 kN, and wind load up to 34 m/s. If you need a higher load resistance, ask for advice. 

Installing: We provide instructions and consultation for the installation process. You will need 2 to 6 installers to set up one dome, along with simple cordless carpentry tools and a scaffold tower. Six experienced installers can complete the dome installation in 5 to 6 working days. The PVC cover is best installed when temperatures are above freezing; the warmer it is, the easier it is to install the PVC. Installation of the PVC cover is not recommended at temperatures of -5°C and below.

Worldwide delivery:  

All prefabricated and marked parts are safely packed on a euro pallet. The pallet contains 6 pieces, with a total weight of approximately 800 kg.

Shipping time from 10 weeks in the EU, from 20 weeks to the rest of the world. 

Maintenance: No special maintenance is required in warm weather. If you want to wash off dirt, use normal detergents and water. In winter, when there is a lot of snow, snow must be removed from the walls of the dome. Snow can damage the clear PVC cover panoramic window.
